The Covid-19 Pandemic has put a huge toll on the lives of average Americans. The great resignation has taken place, and we have decided that some of us no longer want to be slaves to the system.
We want to live, eat healthier, travel more, do more. After being subjected to lockdowns, restrictions, and social distancing, we have never been more determined to finally live our lives to the fullest. You never know when your whole world will be ripped out from under you.
As for the travel industry, matters have changed significantly. Hotels are slowly being replaced by Airbnb’s, people are buying and converting busses into road trip-ready homes, Couch-hopping a great addition for the solo traveler.
But what about those of us who still want to spend our time in a hotel. An actual hotel, not an Airbnb makeshift, we’re talking about the Double tree or the Hilton. And what about those who aren’t 21 yet? Let’s take a look at Texas, their regulations, rules, and if you’d have any problem booking a hotel as an 18-year-old.
Are 18-Year-Olds Allowed To Check Into Hotels?
Depending on where you plan to go, you might not be so lucky. Las Vegas for instance. Some hotels require that you be at least 21 years old, some as high as 25. Being 18, you will be held subject to legal liability in the event of breaking something or breaking the law.
In other countries around the world, you might get away with checking into a hotel at as little as 16 years of age. The U.S. is an entirely different ball game though. There is a bunch of red tape, for both renters and hotels. You can expect to need to jump through a couple of hoops. To ensure a flawless stay, we’d suggest calling the hotel in advance and making sure.
● Why Are Some Hotels 21+?
The thing is, most hotels have minibars. Therefore, they don’t want the hassle of changing their policy due to one 18-year-old checking in. Then we have stereotypes that the younger are irresponsible and lack the decency of respecting other people’s belongings. Even though it is a hotel, that is still someone’s livelihood, and unfortunately, history portrays 18-year-olds as careless.
● What Can Happen If You Get Caught Lying About Your Age?
The question you have to ask yourself is: Is the juice going to be worth the squeeze? – Meaning, is lying and possibly getting a mark against your name, worth the few nights in a fancy hotel?
As an establishment with rules, regulations, and rights of admission reserved, any hotel can be held liable if anything happens with a minor. Just as they have the right to hold you liable if anything goes wrong at your hands. Lying about your age is a criminal offense and if the hotel deemed it necessary, they can press charges.
- You can be held liable for damages and defamation.
- You can be charged with a criminal offense.
- You can go to jail for knowingly providing false information.
What Can Happen If An 18-year-old gets caught drinking from a minibar?
Depending on which state you are in, you could get into some serious trouble. In Texas though, regardless if your attempt was fruitful or not, if you get caught you could face:
- A class C misdemeanor, that will land you a $500 fine.
- Community service.
- Subject to attending an alcohol awareness class.
- 30 – 180 days suspension of your driver’s license.
If this isn’t your first time getting caught, you could lose your license indefinitely, and pay up to $2000 for your fine. You may also be sentenced to 180 days in jail.
This will reflect on your record for the rest of your life, so be careful and courteous in any situation.
Which Hotels In Texas Allow 18-Year-Olds?
Whether you are 18, 19, or 20 years old. These hotels will be suitable for you. Remember though, that you can be held liable for any damages or breaking of the law within the hotel, so no drinking!

What Does The Law Say About Minors Renting Hotel Rooms?
The U.S. is pretty strict when it comes to your legal age and what you can be held liable for. Remember, this establishment also needs to protect itself from harm and other liabilities.
● Is It Illegal To Rent A Room To Minors?
It would be illegal to supply a room to a teenager if there is a mini-bar inside the room. Since the legal drinking age is 21, hotels are reluctant to rent rooms to minors – anyone from the age of 13-17 on their own. Parents should be present when checking in. If you are 18 on the other hand, you will be held liable for when or if you break the law.
● How Do Hotels Protect Themselves In The Event Of Checking In An 18-Year-Old?
Hotels have the rights of admissions reserved. Meaning that if a renter causes any problems or breaks any rules, they can ask you to leave, call the police, and in extreme cases press charges against you.
● Do Your Parents Need To Check In With You?
The only time that your parents would be needed to check in with you, is if you are younger than 16. This is a requirement because if you are younger than 16, your parents will be held liable for your actions. If you are 16 or older you will need an unabridged birth certificate and your parents’ credit card. Though, in some states and in some hotels you will not be able to check in unless you are over 18 or over 21.
What Can Go Wrong?
The rule of thumb is to not tempt fate. Many things can go wrong. And you certainly don’t want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
What Happens If You Break Something?
Depending on if it was an accident or not, you may just need to pay for damages. On the other hand, if it was on purpose or due to negligence, the hotel has the right to press charges and ask you to leave.
What Happens If You Sneak In A Friend?
The biggest issue here is getting caught. If you don’t get caught, nothing will happen. The worst that can happen though is they will request you to pay for the extra person per night that they stayed. Again, some hotels might ask you to leave as they have rights of admissions reserved.
Can The Hotel Kick You Out?
Yes, they can. Depending on your behavior, regardless of your age. Any hotel has the right to kick you out if you are:
- Causing a scene.
- Breaking and entering (getting caught sneaking in a friend).
- If you are an underage visitor getting caught drinking.
- If the hotel deems it necessary.
They can also completely deny you any admission, even after you have booked a room. If you get there, and you are clearly underage, lying about your age, smelling of alcohol, etc.
